Welcome to Shrawley Walkers
Shrawley Walkers meet every other Wednesday.
Normally the walks are in Worcestershire, they vary in length from about 3 to 5 miles and are taken at a fairly gentle pace. Longer walks are sometimes planned for the more adventurous but details of these are given in advance so members may decide for themselves if they would be too challenging.
Walks almost invariably end at a pub where a pleasant hour or so is spent eating, drinking and generally socialising.
Regular members take it in turn to 'lead' the walks. This means that they are given the responsibility of holding the map but slight deviations are the norm! There is a 'voluntary' donation of £1 from each walker (and dog) which we give to charity. In 2019 we donated £975, splitting this between the Bumble Bee Society, The Abberley Care Farm, Acorns Childrens Hospice, Victim Support UK, Diabetes UK, The Royal British Legion, Guide Dogs for the Blind.
Since starting in 2000 the Shrawley Walkers have raised a total of £11,335 for charity and have walked 2,180 miles. Various other Social Events take place during the year. In 2019 as well as our 21st Anniversary dinner we had our usual Mid-Summer’s Day Supper, Harvest Home Supper and the Shrawley Walkers Christmas Dinner. We also have an annual BBQ.
For the year of 2020 Alan Wild produced another Walkers Calendar recording events throughout 2019. This is a great success and has now become an annual occurrence raising a significant amount of money for donation to charities. Bob Bovill, our cartographer, also produced most professional maps of all the walks undertaken that year.
As you will probably have gathered this both a walking group and a social group. However all Shrawley residents are most welcome to join us on a regular or occasional basis. It is a great way to meet people especially if you have recently moved to the area.
If you are new to the group please give us a ring to let us know that you are coming. (Should you then be unable to make it we would appreciate if you would ring Alan’s number so that we don’t wait for you).
Corona Virus Update October 2020
We have started walking again since lockdown but with greatly reduced numbers of not more than 6. We had our Anniversary Supper in February but all other Dinners have had to be cancelled.
